Monthly Move: Helping Deserving Children Experience Youth Sports
Local pageant titleholder Alyssia Johnston had already built an impressive résumé, earning titles such as Miss Southern Utah and Miss Utah Tech, modeling, and competing in regional events across the country. Yet despite her success, something felt missing. Alyssia wanted to give back to the community that had supported her for so many years. That passion eventually became the foundation for the nonprofit organization Monthly Move.
The idea for Monthly Move began as Alyssia reflected on her own childhood struggles participating in sports and activities. For many families, the cost of equipment, travel, and league fees creates barriers that make youth sports feel impossible. Football gear in the United States can average around $500 per season, while hockey equipment may cost up to $800. As children grow, those expenses continue to rise with the need for replacement gear, tournament travel, and registration costs. In some sports, a single season can total thousands of dollars.
Remembering those challenges firsthand, Alyssia knew she wanted to help other children gain access to the same opportunities. She has spoken openly about growing up in an abusive environment and finding comfort and escape through dance. On Monthly Move’s website, she explains:
“I created this nonprofit from my own experience growing up, where movement and athletics were a safe outlet during some really challenging seasons of life. Sports gave me confidence, structure, and a sense of belonging when I needed it most.”
At the heart of Monthly Move is its “Sports Starter Kit” initiative. The program provides deserving children with the equipment they need to begin participating in sports and activities. Whether it is dance, football, cheer, soccer, hockey, or gymnastics, Monthly Move works to ensure children have the tools necessary to get started. Dozens of children throughout Utah have already benefited from the program based on demonstrated financial need.
Monthly Move partners with Circles USA, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to expand mentorship opportunities and community outreach efforts nationwide. While the organization began in St. George, Utah, Monthly Move has already extended its impact beyond the state, recently sponsoring a dance event in Ashland, Virginia through its partnership with Circles USA.
As the organization continues to grow, Monthly Move has also developed a recognizable brand through apparel and merchandise featuring its unique designs on hats, shirts, and bags distributed to participants and supporters.
